Advanced BioRecycle™ Poop Bags

The poop bag that's tough on walks and kinder after them.

Messy Mutts Advanced BioRecycle™ bags are thick, leak-resistant and won't fall apart on the shelf. They're made with an organic additive that helps landfill microbes start breaking them down, and that's independently lab-tested.

Built for the walk, not the shelf

Your dog doesn't care what the bag is made of. You care a lot when it fails halfway through the pickup.

Many compostable bags start weakening within about a year of production, and some are already ageing by the time they reach the store. That's when fingers go through and bags tear. Advanced BioRecycle™ bags are made to hold up until you use them, so walks stay about your dog, not about damage control.

  • Heavy-duty 15-micron film that resists tears and leaks
  • Opaque colour so what's inside stays out of sight
  • Made with over 50% post-consumer recycled plastic, giving existing plastic a second job
  • No rush to use them up. The additive doesn't weaken the bag on the shelf

How Advanced BioRecycle™ works

Regular plastic gives microbes almost nothing to work with. Advanced BioRecycle™ adds an organic ingredient to the film that gives landfill microbes a way in.

  1. On the shelf and on the walk, nothing happens. The additive needs microbes and the right conditions. A roll in your pocket or your cupboard stays strong.
  2. Once buried in a landfill, the oxygen runs out. That's when oxygen-free (anaerobic) microbes, already living in landfills, become active.
  3. Microbes are drawn to the additive. As they feed, they begin working into the plastic itself.
  4. What they break down becomes biogas. That's mostly methane and carbon dioxide. In the US, about 91% of landfilled household waste goes to landfills with gas collection systems, according to the EPA. Hundreds of those landfills turn the gas into electricity or renewable natural gas.

How fast this happens depends heavily on the landfill: its moisture, temperature and how it's managed. That's why we share our actual lab results below instead of promising a number of years.

As microbes keep consuming the plastic, Advanced BioRecycle™ is designed to reduce, and eventually eliminate, the microplastics a bag leaves behind.

Lab tested

Advanced BioRecycle™ bags have been tested using ASTM D5511, the standard method for measuring how plastics break down in oxygen-free, landfill-like conditions. Our 61-day test was run by one of the world's leading independent testing labs.

Test (ASTM D5511) Duration Biodegradation
Long-duration test 662 days 72%
Accelerated test 61 days 7.0% (cellulose reference control: 88.1%)

Both tests measure the biogas released as microbes break the bag down. Lab conditions are controlled, and real landfills vary, so results in the ground will depend on the site.

FAQ

Can Advanced BioRecycle™ bags go in the green bin?

In some Canadian cities, yes. Toronto and Ottawa, for example, accept dog waste in plastic bags in the Green Bin; the bags are separated out and sent to landfill. In most of the US, dog waste goes in the garbage. Check your local rules. The bags aren't compostable, so keep them out of backyard compost.

Will the bags break down in my cupboard?

No. The additive only becomes active with landfill microbes in oxygen-free conditions. Your rolls stay strong until you use them.

How long do they take to break down in a landfill?

It depends on the landfill. Moisture, temperature and how the site is managed all matter. In ASTM D5511 lab testing, the bag reached 72% biodegradation in 662 days. We share the test results instead of promising a number of years.

Does the biogas really become energy?

It can. In the US, about 91% of landfilled household waste goes to landfills that collect their gas, according to the EPA. Hundreds of landfills use it to make electricity or renewable natural gas. Others flare it, which converts methane to carbon dioxide, a less potent greenhouse gas. It depends on where your garbage goes.

What's the recycled content?

Over 50% of each bag is post-consumer recycled plastic.
