Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of your dog's regular food: canned, or dehydrated food rehydrated per the package directions
  • 1 tsp plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 Caledon Farms Sweet Potato Chew, broken into strips
  • 2 shaped dog biscuits of your choice (Elyse used Douceurs à Croc-quer), or mashed sweet potato frozen in the Messy Mutts Bone Treat Maker, filled to the 1/2 oz line
  • A few kibble pieces for decorating
Pantry safety check: no xylitol, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, chocolate or macadamia nuts. Always check labels on broths and nut butters.

Method

  1. Spoon the Greek yogurt into the bottom of the Puzzle'n Play Mushroom.
  2. Pack the food into the centre cup and the outer ring, leaving a little room at the top.
  3. Stand the sweet potato strips upright at the back of the centre cup.
  4. Press one biscuit in front of the strips and a second into the outer ring.
  5. Line the outer ring with kibble.
  6. Freeze for 3 to 4 hours, until firm. Serve on the floor and supervise.

Why it's good for them

Working food out of a frozen puzzle toy is a slow, focused job, which helps dogs settle. Using their regular food keeps it simple, and sweet potato adds fibre and crunch.

Storage

Make it ahead and keep it frozen until serving. Count the food as part of your dog's daily meal, not an extra. Brand names are mentioned as used by the submitter; no affiliation implied.
